podcasting gear

As some of you know, I am slowly making my way into podcasting. If all goes as planned, I’m going to integrate some podcasts into my fall 2009 classes. In addition, I’ll be adding audio and video to our composition blog (I’ve already put up a YouTube page, but ideally what I want is merge video, audio, and text all on the composition blog page). The new version of WordPress, happily, makes all of this a little easier. Not to mention that I’m slowly making my way into CSS.

Anyway, it’s that time of year to make requests for technology through the university’s student tech fee funds. I’m actually going to put in for some stuff in the hopes of not only adding video or audio to my class blogs/websites, but also producing quasi-professional digital texts. So, here’s what I am requesting: A Logitech QuickCam Pro, the “Snowflake” USB microphone, and a decent Koss headset. As much as I like the web cam that I have now, the quality of the video is pretty low for the kind of work I want to do.

I broke down and bought my own copy of Adobe Premier Elements after a student recommended it to me. I am still learning that program (videos of my son are my raw materials for that little endeavor). And for podcasting, I’ve been using Audacity, since it’s 1) free; and 2) seems to be highly recommended across the blogosphere. And I’ve beenscouring YouTube for hints and guidance on podcasting start-up. To tel you the truth, podcasting has really got 

me excited. After DJ-ing on university radio as an undergrad and then with my friend Rich in grad school (AJAR Radio!), it would be a whole lot of fun to put some headsets back on.

And who knows…if all goes well, maybe I’ll indulge myself by getting the microphone that I really want…But for now, Snowball is going to have to wait :-) .

Article urges higher education to infuse curricula with 21st Century skills

Here is the first paragraph of the article “Create, Collaborate, Communicate: Empowering Students With 21st Century Skills,” by Chris Riedel. It was published in T.H.E. Journal in January.

“We need to change the way we teach,” said Howie DiBlasi, speaking at FETC 2009 in Orlando, FL last week. DiBlasi, retired district CIO and emerging technology evangelist, pointed to a statistic from the United States Department of Commerce that left many in the audience shaking their heads: According to a study that ranked 55 industry sectors by their level of IT intensiveness, “education ranked 55 … below coal mining.”
